The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
