The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
