A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
